The dynamism of the gas transport business exceeds that of many competitive markets. The pressure to change arises from both regulatory requirements and the behavior of market participants. As a result, the German natural gas market is organized into two market areas in which many hundreds of network operators act as one. The associated coordination effort is hardly understandable for outsiders.
The planning and approval of new natural gas pipelines requires technical expertise as well as an intensive dialogue with the public, authorities and property owners. Its construction is no less challenging: GASCADE coordinated around 2,500 external employees during the relocation of the OPAL. The pipeline project - the largest of its kind in Europe in 2011 - was completed on time and on budget.
The operational operation and dispatching of a pipeline system is a round-the-clock business with many influencing factors: Compressors provide the necessary pressure, fittings regulate gas flows and switch routes, efficiently and remotely.
