About Company

Genomatica is a widely-recognized bioengineering technology leader for the chemical industry. We develop biobased processes that enable our licensee partners to produce widely-used chemicals a ‘better way,’ from alternative feedstocks, with better economics and greater sustainability than using petroleum-based feedstocks.

Our GENO BDO™ process has produced thousands of tons of BDO; BASF and Novamont have licensed it; and Cargill offers production support services. The BDO produced with it continues to extend further into product value chains, with validation from firms including Invista (Lycra®spandex), BASF (PolyTHF®), DSM, Lanxess, Toray, and Far Eastern New Century.

Genomatica is using its integrated bioengineering platform and over 600 patents and applicationsto develop processes for additional chemicals, including butadiene and nylon intermediates. Our work is supported by partners including Versalis and Braskem, along with more than $100 million in industry support, as anticipated under current agreements.

We have raised over $125 million in financing from Alloy Ventures, Bright Capital, Cargill, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Mohr Davidow Ventures, TPG Biotech, VantagePoint Capital Partners, Versalis and Waste Management.

Genomatica’s recognition includes the World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer award,Kirkpatrick Award (for ‘the most noteworthy chemical engineering technology commercialized in the world’), ICIS Top 40 Power Players, #1 Hottest four years in a row by Biofuels Digest,EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation award, and Best Place to Work by The Scientist two years in a row.

Genomatica’s Bioengineering Solutions group helps industrial, food & beverage, agriculture, bio-pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies develop and improve their products. Target products include nutraceuticals, probiotics, enzymes, flavors, fragrances, cosmetic ingredients, amino acids and more.

We bring customers our strength in bioengineering—an integrated, ‘whole-process’ approach that intertwines techno-economic analysis, biotechnology and engineering for complete solutions. We use our integrated bioengineering platform and expertise to help customers at any stage during development or commercialization, including:

  • Ideation: We can help identify, develop and protect new approaches. This can includeintellectual property assessment and planning (patent searches, technical risks and mitigation, plans to develop and secure IP); and pathway assessment (understanding the metabolic approaches to convert one compound into another).
  • Evaluation: We can apply our computational modeling capabilities to develop optimal technical solutions; and techno-economic analysis to optimize process economics.
  • Project execution: Genomatica has proven expertise in strain engineering; enzyme engineering; bioprocess design; and precision fermentation.
  • Validation: We can pilot new processes; and help ensure reliable, industrial scale-up.

Recent examples include:

  • developing pathways for biological production of a chemical currently made from plant extracts;
  • developing biobased processes to make natural products for flavors and fragrances;
  • techno-economic analysis to guide optimal selection of feedstock, design of microorganism, and overall bioprocess design for a new bioprocess;
  • conceptual design of a bubble column fermentor;
  • designing a pilot plant.

We offer distinctive advantages as your partner:

  • Leading technology: Genomatica has earned widespread recognition as a leader in bioengineering. Awards include the Kirkpatrick Award, for ‘the most noteworthy chemical engineering technology commercialized in the world’; being named #1 Hottest four years in a row; and the 2015 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer award.
  • Leading track record: We delivered an advantaged commercial process (for the chemical 1,4-BDO) in record time and are making steady advances with additional processes.
  • Partner-of-choice: Multiple large firms, including BASF, Braskem, ENI Versalis, Cargill and Novamont, license our technology, deploy visiting scientists, or invest in our firm.
  • Whole-process approach: All the parts need to work to result in a successful process—and we follow this holistic approach. So even if you only need us for one piece of your project, we’re still taking other factors into account, to help ensure a successful outcome.

Typical engagements begin with a modest evaluation or feasibility project, often completed within several weeks; and can then extend across multiple phases.
