In 2014, the Company celebrates its 50th year in business. From small beginnings we have grown into a medium-sized company with wide-ranging interests and several divisions: civil engineering construction and remediation, energy, property development, plant hire and farming and estate management.
Based at our headquarters in Perth and our regional office in Warrington, around 200 staff work on projects throughout the UK.
I & H Brown is synonymous with quality, innovation and unrivalled service to a growing client base.
Our history is one of continuing evolution around our core skills and our fundamental principle of adding value for our customers and partners.
We place a high value on maintaining our distinctive culture and we welcome our description as a ‘mini conglomerate’. We believe that our greatest strengths are our flexibility, our diversity and above all our client focus.
We value our people because we recognise that our business depends on committed individuals who share the company’s ethos and objectives. We invest heavily in training and personal development and we encourage staff to take responsibility and to show initiative.
I & H Brown has never stood still. We are always looking to grow from our current strengths and to keep abreast - or ahead - of industry trends. Throughout our growth as a company, we have successfully broadened our scope into new areas. We have always been active in identifying ways to innovate and to add value to our business. Recent examples include successfully obtaining CEMARS Certification as part of our Carbon Management programme and also achieving CSCS Platinum Status.
We started in 1964 as a plant hirer then evolved into sub-contracting and, from the mid 1970s, into a Civil Engineering main contractor. We have successfully completed around 500 projects and we are proud that our managing director, Scott Brown, was the first Chairman of CECA Scotland.
Environmental improvement work is at the heart of our business. From extensive involvement in the colliery reclamation in the 1980s, we have become Scotland’s leading contractor in the reclamation of brownfield sites and theRemediation of contaminated land. Our Development Division now applies our accumulated expertise to similar sites.
We added surface mining to our portfolio in 1985, since when we have extracted over 3 million tonnes of coal. More recently, our Energy Division has focused on renewable energy. We operate one wind farm and have gained consents for three others, generating around 85MW.
We have always had interests in Farming and Estates and this remains so today, with land in Perthshire, Fife, East Lothian and Inverness-shire.
