About Company

Irving Oil was founded in 1924, and is an international refining and marketing company with a history of long-term partnerships and relationships. Named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2017, Irving Oil operates Canada’s largest refinery, in Saint John, New Brunswick, which is located 65 miles north of the US border, and has reached production rates in excess of 320,000 barrels per day. It also operates Ireland’s only refinery, located at Whitegate in southeast Ireland. With a capacity of 75,000 barrels per day, the Irving Oil Whitegate Refinery serves commercial and wholesale customers throughout Ireland and parts of Europe. With over 900 fueling locations, operations from 10 distribution terminals, and a delivery fleet of tractor-trailers, Irving Oil serves wholesale, commercial, and retail customers in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and New England.

Our leadership

In 1924 Kenneth Colin Irving from Bouctouche, New Brunswick founded Irving Oil Limited.  He built the company by giving good service to his customers and by showing respect to his employees.  K.C. Irving’s leadership qualities, along with his vision and entrepreneurial spirit, continue to inspire and guide us today. Under his direction, the company expanded from a single service station in Bouctouche, New Brunswick to a retail and terminal network spanning from Montreal to St. John’s. Working closely with his sons, Arthur and Jack, K.C. Irving also built the foundation of our company’s operations – our Saint John Refinery and Irving Canaport, the first deep water terminal in the Western Hemisphere. K.C. Irving was widely recognized for his significant business achievements.  He was one of the first inductees to the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada.  Over the past number of decades, Arthur has led our company’s growth through expanding refining capacity and geographic reach into New England, while retaining a strong customer focus and emphasis on long-term relationships.  Jack oversaw the construction of much of Irving Oil’s infrastructure, as well as developing regional steel and architectural concrete companies, Ocean Steel and Strescon.  Throughout their careers, both have championed innovation and environmental responsibility by becoming early adopters of world-class processes, practices and technologies. Their commitment to the people working at Irving Oil and their commitment to the community have been unwavering.  Today, our leadership team continues this storied tradition of commitment to our people and the communities where we live and work.

History

What began as a small service station in Bouctouche, New Brunswick has grown into the leading regional energy company in Eastern Canada and New England. Today, we are known widely for our commitment to customer service, environmental awareness and contributing to the communities in which we operate.  Our customer focus has been with us from the start. Living close to our first service station, K.C. Irving was always on the job, looking after customers.  He is remembered for helping customers who honked their horns for service—even in the middle of the night—to fuel up and make it home.  K.C. Irving was proud to give good service and build his business.  Today, our personalized attention to our customers remains the same and differentiates us in the highly competitive energy market place.

Supply

Irving Oil relies on a network of diverse, reliable and quality crude oil suppliers from various regions around the world with whom we have many long-term supplier partnerships.  Most of our crude arrives by ship, which is unloaded at our Irving Canaport Marine Terminal in Saint John, New Brunswick. Commissioned in 1970, Irving Canaport was the western hemisphere’s first deep-water crude terminal able to receive supertankers, with over 6 million barrels of storage capacity for our refining operations.  Once the crude is processed at our Saint John refinery, 80 per cent of our products are delivered to marine terminals along the east coast of North America.

Code of ethical conduct

At Irving Oil, we strive to achieve the highest standards of ethical business and personal conduct, integrity and professionalism.  Our company’s Code of Ethical Conduct is designed to communicate our commitment to ethical business conduct and provide guidance to all employees as they apply these principles every day in performing their responsibilities.
