K Road DG is a Distributed Generation and Smart Grid business and operations platform. This platform will develop, build, own and operate assets globally by acquiring or providing capital in conjunction with managed alliances to a select set of Energy Storage and Smart Grid operating companies.

K Road DG’s first predecessor company was founded in 2002 as a vehicle to help recapitalize and restructure troubled US power companies following the power market crash of 2001, K Road affiliates oversaw the capital restructuring, rehabilitation and operation of nearly 3,000 MW of natural gas and oil fired generating capacity in the northeastern United States.

In 2008 the company turned its sights exclusively to the renewable power sector and power infrastructure related to building a clean, sustainable energy future for the United States.

In 2009 K Road Power was formed to develop own and operate utility scale PV solar projects. K Road Power developed nearly 2,000 MWs of solar installations in the United States of which over 380 MW are now in or nearing commercial operations. Most notably are the 350 MW K Road Moapa and the 32 MW K Road Modesto projects.

By providing capital and strategic assistance to its alliance partners, K Road DG promotes intelligent and sustainable, storage, distributed generation and Smart Grid companies. K Road DG adheres strictly to the principles of environmental and social responsibility with a focus on the creation of long-term shareholder value.

Founded in 2014 by veteran independent power industry executives William Kriegel, Gerrit Nicholas, Mark Friedland and advised by longtime technology investor George Coelho, K Road DG is launching a new Distributed Generation and Smart Grid business and operations platform based on the conviction that renewable and distributed power generation will and should ultimately power much of the globe. Those systems that will drive efficiency and cost reduction through advanced technologies will lead the sector for decades to come. With over 100 years of collective experience in global conventional and renewable energy markets, K Road DG and its principals will provide capital infusions in conjunction with managed alliances and developments across a select set of global Energy Storage and Smart Grid operating companies.

K Road is managed by a seasoned team of professionals with over 100 years of combined leadership experience in the industry at major energy corporations including Sithe Energies, The AES Corporation, Goldman Sachs, and Intel Capital.

Together, K Road principals have a 30 year history of successfully developing and safely operating over 20,000 MW of conventional and renewable power assets, creating safe and reliable electricity for millions of customers while protecting exceptional value for both shareholders and project stakeholders.

The K Road management team developed more than 380 MW of photovoltaic solar projects including K Road Moapa and K Road Modesto.

World energy consumption continues to grow and with it energy demand continues to outpace supply. In The United States, where we consume more electricity per capita than any country in the world, we continue to be under supplied in many regions. That said, most developed nations including Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom are challenged with the same imbalance.

As a result many parts of the world are grappling with the cost of developing new sources of supply. In the past we may have taken for granted an inefficient energy production and grid transmission system that is subsidized by the long term health of the environment, however, for the protection of future generations we can no longer afford to do so.

Currently power prices in North America only partially account for the social and environmental costs of producing electricity. Whether or not you believe in the effects of greenhouse gas production on global climate change, we must all agree that environmental contamination of any sort should be priced appropriately if we are to rely on our market economies to rationalize behavior and shift to sustainable practices.

So what are we to do? We must certainly first and foremost reduce consumption through greater efficiency. In addition, we must account for the true costs of both our use and our electricity production which will in turn also curb demand.

At the same time, advance technology applications in distributed generation, renewable energy and storage present intelligent, environmentally and economically sustainable solutions to meeting the global growing demand for clean and reliable energy.

In 2014 the drivers for distributed generation and smart grid solutions are extraordinarily compelling:

coal-based generation is under siege due to the disproportionate production of air, land and water emissions including extraordinary volumes of greenhouse gases;
nuclear power production is in a state of disarray as the industry struggles to cope with its ever present and daunting security and health challenges;
natural gas-based generation, while the appropriate and most likely base-load replacement for coal and nuclear options given the vast domestic resource, may face headwinds from permitting constraints and cost uncertainty.
