Our History

Longs started selling propane back in 1951 from the back door of a furniture store owned by Earl Long. Earl was in the business of selling furniture and appliances. When customers purchased stoves, they needed propane and Earl decided to install a bulk propane tank one mile north of Marlette. As the demand for propane grew, so did the need for additional propane storage. Today, the Marlette bulk plant has four bulk tanks with the capacity to hold almost 100,000 gallons.

Agricultural Uses for Propane

Many farmers in our area use propane for grain drying, dairy heating, and space heating. At Longs, we understand your specialized needs and schedules. That is why you can depend on us to keep your tanks full, one less thing for you to worry about. Whether you own your tanks or lease them from us free, we will be there when you need us.More than 1.5 billion gallons of propane are used on more than 660,000 farms every year for hundreds of different applications, including: 

• Flame Weeding: Farmers using propane-gas flame weeders have reported higher yields per acre by using propane.
• Pest Control: Propane gas flamers can provide 70 percent to 90 percent control of wintering adult insects compared with 25 percent to 50 percent provided by chemical pesticides, and propane flamers cost three to five times less per acre than chemical controls.
• Crop Drying: Propane drying systems are widely used because of the simplicity of the required equipment, which contributes to low equipment, fuel, and maintenance costs.
• Irrigation Pumps: Propane-fueled irrigation pumps produce the same amount of power as gasoline or diesel engines, with lower emissions. Propane will not leave a dangerous and sometimes toxic residue, as liquid fuels can.
• Poultry and Pig Brooding: Infrared propane brooders have proven to be more efficient and stay warmer with less heat than forced-air furnaces. Fuel costs are also 15 to 25 percent less than those for forced-air furnaces.
• Crop Heating: Propane heaters operate efficiently for long periods while producing enough heat to prevent valuable crops from being ruined by unexpected cold spells. Propane is also used in heating greenhouses.

At Longs, we fill your gas grill tank to the full 20 pounds of propane for which your tank was designed. You do NOT get a full 20 pounds when you take it to an exchange center. In a propane tank exchange, they only put 15 lbs. in your tank (5 lbs. LESS than the capacity of the tank!)

• We fill your cylinder by weight so you only pay for the gas we dispense into the tank
• We will take the cylinder from your vehicle, refill it, and place it back into the vehicle
• We fill YOUR cylinder while you wait (your tank is not exchanged for an older tank).
• We will inspect your tank for any safety issues
