INTRODUCING WIND

Can we light up the world and fuel our vehicles without polluting the environment? The answer may be blowing in the wind. Its not enough to set up hundreds of turbines at a blustery site to create a "wind farm" and hope that consistent gusts will generate electricity. Its necessary to know where fast winds blow and how best to harness them since the amount of power generated increases with wind speed and turbine blade diameter.     Modern wind turbines fall into two basic groups: the horizontal-axis variety and the vertical-axis design, like the eggbeater-style Darrieus model, after its French inventor. Almost all turbines in use today are horizontal axis. Horizontal-axis wind turbines typically have three blade rotor, a nacelle containing coupling, gear box, asynchronous generator, cooling systems, anemometer on a tall tubular or lattice tower. These three-bladed wind turbines are operated "upwind," with the blades facing into the wind.

LOCATING WIND TURBINES

Wind resource assessment and study at a given location projects availability of energy in terms of watts per unit of blade swept area. Based on many such studies, DOE (Department Of Energy) has classified different regions of US into several wind class zones, Wind Class 7 to 1, with highest number representing the areas with highest energy potential and lowest number assigned to areas that have least amount of wind energy.       As the wind passes though a turbine energy is extracted causing the wind speed in the wake of the turbine to decrease. When several turbines are built near one another, as in a wind farm, it is important to separate the turbines appropriately to minimize these array losses. Spacing turbines too tightly leads to reduced performance and increased maintenance due to higher turbulence at the downwind turbines. Turbine spacing is expressed in terms of the Rotor Dia (RD) of the turbine in consideration. So for instance if a 77 m diameter rotor is used, then 2 RD means 2 x 77 m = 154 m = 505

INTRODUCING SOLAR PV & HOT WATER

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) module makes use of the abundant energy in the sun converts to electricity, and it has little impact on our environment. Photo voltaic can be used to power a wide range of products, from small consumer electronic items to large commercial solar electric systems.

  • Components of a typical grid connected solar PV system are PV arrays, inverter, connecting wiring, DC & AC disconnects and structural needs compatible with applications; including batteries and charge controller for non-grid systems

  • Provide investigation, engineering design, drawing, specifications and procurement and installation support services for large commercial to residential applications. Support clients in identifying the available incentives, credits, RECs, taxes and recommending low cost renewable financing to satisfy investment obligations. Provide long term financial analysis for client to make viable business decision.

  • Incentives from NY (NYSERDA and LIPA), NJ and CT and Federal tax credits generally pay about 50% of the installed cost -- and a state tax credit for NY residents -- help reduce the cost even further. For solar domestic HW systems, the federal tax credit can cover as much as 30% of the cost. For NY residents, the state tax credit can cover another 25% of the cost! Commercial solar installations receive substantial federal tax incentives, making for very impressive rates of returns: as high as 25%!

  • Solar heating harnesses the energy of the sun to provide solar thermal energy for domestic hot water, space heating and pool heating applications;

  • Solar thermal systems for residential and commercial applications, use either Flat glazed panel or evacuated pipe collector panels. Additional system components could be plumbing pipe, valves, controls.

  • In Colder climates, system uses heat exchanger with antifreeze mixture in the primary loop, while secondary loop delivers the hot water. Solar thermal systems are many times more efficient in capturing the suns energy compared to the efficiency obtainable in solar PV panels.

  • Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technology has been utilized with parabolic trough and/or solar tower to produce commercial scale electric power. In the U.S., nine CSP power plants totaling 354 MW have been operating reliably in California for over 16 years.

  • PDR Energy group has worked on commercial scale as well as residential solar PV and thermal systems. Jointly with Dome Tech energy, we worked on Clarion University solar PV proposal, worked to install few large residential solar PV systems in NJ. Additional project: Solar hot water for commercial laundry, NJ

  • We specify efficient solar PV arrays of Sharp, Kyocera, BP solar, DASOL solar of China and solar thermal collectors by BP solar, Veismann, SEIDU of China, Germinox of France and other certified US makers.

INTRODUCING BIO DIESEL

Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable fuel made from animal or vegetable fats and oils, and alcohol and catalyst; chemical name of the process transformation is called trans-esterification. The fuel properties of biodiesel are very similar to those of petroleum diesel, and biodiesel has the potential to completely replace petroleum diesel in many applications. Biodiesel can be readily integrated into the existing petroleum diesel supply, transportation, and distribution infrastructure. Can be used in power generation with varying blends. Biodiesel can be used in most conventional diesel engines with NO retrofit.

  • Biodiesel has greater lubricity than petroleum diesel, which reduces engine wear.

  • Ultra-Low-Sulfur (ULS) Diesel requires an additive to improve its lubricity. Unlike the synthetic lubricity additives currently used, biodiesel is an organic, combustible fuel. With even 2% biodiesel added, fuel burns more efficiently and even improves the efficiency of retrofit technologies like diesel oxidation catalysts and particulate filters by inhibiting the accumulation of ash.

  • Biodiesel is significantly less toxic than petroleum diesel, and is more biodegradable than petro diesel, reducing the negative impacts of spills.

  • Biodiesel is four times as efficient as diesel fuel in utilizing fossil energy. Biodiesel yields around 3.2 units of fuel for every unit of fossil energy consumed in the lifecycle. By contrast, petroleum diesels life cycle yields on only 0.83 units of fuel product per unit of fossil energy consumed.

  • In not too distant future, bio diesel will be produced in much larger quantities, and at a much lower cost, from ALGAE. NRELs research showed that one quad (7.5 billion gallons) of bio diesel could be produced from ALGAE grown on 200K hectares of desert land.

  • In USA bio diesel is primarily processed from soybean seeds and to lesser degree from animal fats, WVO. Depending on local availability, bio diesel is primarily produced from canola in Canada & Europe, from palm in South East Asia and few South American countries. Countries like India and several African nations are planning to produce bio diesel from non-edible oil of Jatropha seeds, without adversely impacting the edible oil production and demand. Production has been steadily growing and US production was 225 million gallons for 2006.

  • Because of environmental benefits and production of renewable fuel, incentives like production and tax credits, accelerated deprec. outright grants and guaranteed low cost loans etc are available for production of bio diesel. Industry growth has somewhat slowed during 2007, especially due to quick rise of feedstock price

  • PDR Assocs Energy group has been working on feasibility, engineering and development of several bio diesel projects both in US and India. Staff of our certified bio diesel engineers and developers supports the clients in developing the project and provide engineering, procurement and financial services.

  • We have developed, resourced cost effective process of producing with integrated process equipments to produce BQ 9000 certified bio diesel and associated saleable byproducts. Based on process and systems, our dry and/or water wash system for B100 can economize system cost by 40% compared to market.
