About Company

Peregrine Energy Group helps organizations to make better decisions about energy.  We are an energy efficiency consulting company with a unique expertise in energy data analysis. Our customers are typically organizations that manage multiple buildings and complex energy challenges. We provide gap-filling expertise and guidance to help them understand their energy picture, manage their energy use and costs, and set and achieve energy goals.  Our services span energy data analysis and reporting, energy management, and strategic consulting. We believe in making decisions based on data. We bring a deep knowledge of energy efficiency and energy use in buildings, especially in cities in towns, a thorough understanding of energy programs and policies, and a passion for making energy data easy to understand, use, and share with others.

Independent evaluator (IE) for large renewable energy procurements

Peregrine’s IE team has served as independent evaluator (or similar role) in dozens of competitive procurements for long-term contracts involving clean or alternative energy.  In Massachusetts, we are currently the IE for two major utility procurements: one for 9,450,000 MWh of land-based clean energy and another for up to 800 MW of offshore wind energy.  Previously, we worked as the consultant to the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources in connection with a multi-state Clean Energy RFP and two previous Massachusetts clean energy RFPs.

Net metering credit calculation

For organizations managing a group of solar energy projects that need help calculating net metering credits and allocating those credits across the project, we can lift the burden. Building on our experience doing exactly this for more than 25 MW of solar already, we have developed a streamlined methodology that integrates utility and developer bills with schedule Z information and enough checks and balances to ensure accuracy.

Third-party meter reading / independent verification for renewable energy certificates (RECs)

For organizations wishing to qualify RECs in the NEPOOL GIS for use with Renewable Portfolio Standard compliance in New England, we provide the required third-party meter reading and independent verification of system production.

The primary steps of an aggregation implementation are as follows:

  • Massachusetts aggregations must be voted on and approved by the community. If you are a Town Meeting community, this typically occurs at Town Meeting.
  • An aggregation plan is developed that lays out the way the program will work. The aggregation plan is made available for a period of public comment.
  • Once a community’s aggregation plan is approved, it is time to select an electricity supplier
  • Implement a public education and outreach campaign that informs all electricity customers in the community about the aggregation, pricing, and the right to opt out. All citizens have the right to opt out of the aggregation and return to the utility’s Basic Service at any time, at no cost.
  • After the public education campaign, the program launches, with enrollment occurring on the first meter read after the launch date.

Integrating Renewable Energy

Aggregation can be a powerful and flexible tool for integrating renewable energy into your community’s electricity supply. Depending on your community’s priorities, pursuing one, several, or all of the options below can help move your community toward sustainability goals at a pace that makes sense.

  • For communities that are not yet ready for 100%-green energy, but want to honor the concerns of residents and businesses who prioritize the environmental component of their electricity. Providing a greener option gives those who want more renewable energy the ability to choose it.
  • For communities that want to take significant step toward meeting sustainability goals. By directing your electricity supplier to supply only green energy for all program participants, you can ensure that nearly all electricity accounts in your community move to green energy at program launch.
  • For communities that want to support local renewable energy projects. Your community can ask your electricity supplier to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from local projects as part of meeting state requirements for integrating a minimum amount of renewable energy.
