About Company

Pitt & Greene EMC is a North Carolina Non-profit Corporation providing electric power to rural communities.

We are a member of Touchstone Energy®, an alliance of local, consumer-owned electric cooperatives across the country committed to providing superior service to all customers—residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural.

Pitt & Greene EMC belongs to the people who use its services, not stockholders or investors. Each member has a right and an obligation to suggest ways the Co-op can serve its members better. Each member has one vote and with this one vote each member should actively participate in the policy making and activities of the Co-op by making suggestions to their district representative on the Board of Directors.

A cooperative is a business owned and controlled by its users and operated for them on a nonprofit basis. In the cooperative form of business, you and others with similar needs act together, pooling your resources for mutual benefit. By belonging to a cooperative, you are now part of a self-help tradition.

Basic Cooperative Principles

  • A co-op is service oriented.
  • A co-op is user owned.
  • A co-op is locally managed.
  • A co-op has open membership and will provide service to anyone living within its territorial boundaries.
  • A co-op refunds patronage capital to its members.

PITT & GREENE EMC IS A COOPERATIVE and by receiving your electric power from Pitt & Greene EMC, you are a member-owner.

History of Pitt & Greene

Pitt & Greene Electric Membership Corporation is a North Carolina Non-profit Corporation located at 3989 West Wilson Street, Farmville, NC. Its formation began in 1937 for the purpose of providing electric power to undeveloped rural communities with its first homes being energized on March 8, 1938. Construction began on the first Headquarters building in 1953 and completed May 1954. Pitt & Greene was the 14th electrical co-op established in the nation under the US Department of Agriculture, now known as RUS (Rural Utilities Service) with a purpose to promote economic growth throughout rural and small town America.

We currently have 31 employees and serve Pitt, Greene, Lenoir, Wayne, Wilson, and Edgecombe counties. Our average total number of consumers are 8,546 along 1,012 miles of line operated through out the six counties.

Pitt & Greene Capital Credits

Pitt & Greene EMC is a nonprofit electric cooperative owned by the members it serves; therefore, its key objective is to provide electric service to its members at a cost. All electric revenue taken in above the cost of operating the cooperative is returned to the members in the form of Capital Credits.

At the end of each calendar year, the allocation of Capital Credits is made and assigned to a Capital Credit account for each member. Pitt & Greene EMC returns these Capital Credits on a cycle as determined by the Board of Directors.

The money is used by the cooperative for maintaining and upgrading your electrical system until a retirement is made to members. By using this money for a period of time, the cooperative can save by not borrowing money and paying interest.

Payments to estates of deceased members continue to be made upon presentation of a death certificate and proof of administration to the cooperative.

Members should keep the co-op informed of address changes in order that all future Capital Credit checks may be properly addressed.
