In a critical application, there is no such
thing as a minor power problem.

Any application can be defined as critical if it’s yours. Even small irregularities that occur commonly in the delivery of electric power can harm all kinds of technology and have serious repercussions. Here are but a few examples.

A voltage transient in a radiology department’s power system shows up in an X-ray as an artifact. The image is just fuzzy enough to lead to a misdiagnosis.

A false positive reading by automatic test equipment, resulting from an otherwise negligible amount of electromagnetic interference, causes defects in semiconductor chips. Defects that won’t be discovered until there is system failure in the marketplace.

Surge voltage cripples a data communications network, one previously assumed safe because individual servers, disc arrays, switches, and routers were connected to protective devices. In this case, the misapplication of these units actually magnified the problem.
