Watrec Ltd. is a Finnish company established in 2003, specialized in biogas technology and consultancy services for environmental and energy related issues.

History

The company’s first clean tech reference project was finalized in 2005, being the first large-scale co-digestion plant in Finland.

In 2007 Biovakka Suomi awarded Watrec Ltd. for head engineering, project management and plant control software for new biogas plant in Turku area (Southern-Western Finland). Watrec Ltd. was nominated as a Best Practise cleantech company in Brussels, December 2007 by the steering committee and advisory board of the FUNDTEC.

In August 2009 Watrec Ltd. launched 7M€ biogas plant project in Huittinen, Finland. In September Watrec Ltd. signed a contract with VamBio Ltd. to build biogas plant as a turnkey project. Also in September 2009 Watrec Ltd. acted as a consultant in Honkajoki Ltd's rendering plant expansion and development project’s environmental impact assessment (EIA). By the end of 2009 Watrec participated in The International Trade Fair for Recycling Management and Environmental Technology 27 – 30 October 2009, Cologne (Germany).

For a couple of years company had a stagnation period before another high jump.

In 2012 Biotehdas became the main shareholder of Watrec Ltd. Shares were acquired from SITRA – a Finnish Technology Fund - and one private investment company. Since that moment Watrec has started to grow.

In 2013 Watrec begun construction of biogas plant in Kuopio (Finland) and a similar plant in Honkajoki (Finland). Both plants came to opeartion stage in 2014.

In 2014 followed Oulu (Finland). The plant will be in startup phase in February 2015.

At a present moment Watrec has plans for further development in waste water treatment industry and foreign biogas market.

Watrec has gained an in-depth, true experience in biogas plant solutions in large-scale facilities. The experience of the company is based on the efficient combination of the real-life practice from different waste and wastewater treatment process operations as well as from the academic society.

Our design and engineering know-how is based on the both practical and scientific knowledge, which create possibilities to design cost-effective solutions. We prefer minimum use of chemicals and minimum use of energy.

Feasibility Assessment

Feasibility study is a way to reduce the risk of the investment and the study should focus not only to technical aspects of the biogas projects (defining the treated materials, mass and energy balance of the biogas plant, possible inhibitors, process solutions, etc.) but also pay attention to the economical side of the project. Economical evaluation includes the investment cost estimation, cost estimation to operate the plant (manpower, use of chemicals, required spare parts, etc.), which together determines the requirement for the annual turn-over that has to be gained from the operation of the plant.

The turn-over may include the cash flow analysis from the produced energy and received wastes and also the avoidance of the cost for disposal of waste. Certain cases can also earn from the production of fertilizers, where there are lack of nutrients or humus in field use, in forest use, or in other applications. The possibility of grants have also high significance to the project viability, as well as the estimation of the loan rates, investor expectations etc.

The cost of the feasibility assessment compared to project investment is insignificant, usually project owner should expect that the cost lies somewhere between 1-3 % of the final investment, depending on its size. As the proper evaluation indicates clearly the risks that are involved in the actual implementation of the project, it is definitely recommended to conduct such a study before making any decisions.

Watrec technology will allow you:

Watrec biorefinery has high automation level, and with internet connection you can participate in the operation management of the complex biological process. In our biogas plants we trust Finnish automation suppliers.

The construction period of the Watrec biorefinery is typically only 9 months. This is possible because of the long-term development we have done. Our compact design enables the plant to be highly automated and yet cost-efficient.

All Watrec engineering tools are used in 3-D, making it possible to design the plants so that they can be built almost 80 % as pre-fabricated. This is one of the small details that make our products competitive in terms of whole investment.
