About Company

WATT Fuel Cell Corporation is a developer and manufacturer of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (“SOFC”) stacks and systems that operate on common, readily available hydrocarbon fuels such as propane, natural gas, JP-8, and diesel.  WATT’s mission is to provide portable, quiet, light, efficient, affordable, and environmentally responsible energy solutions to a range of power markets with its superior hybrid power products and advanced manufacturing capabilities.  Founded in 2010, WATT commenced its product development and operations in Long Island, NY. In April 2014, the Company acquired veteran fuel cell developer, Pittsburgh Electric Engines Inc. (“PEEI”). During the summer of 2014, operations were expanded with the building of a state-of-the-art SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) additive manufacturing production facility in Mt. Pleasant, PA, about an hour southeast of Pittsburgh.  WATT currently employs 24 people and is ready to expand its management team with strategic hires that will help expand business development, production, and sales.

Our Products

WATT’s ceramic based micro-tubular SOFCs operate at high temperatures, enabling operation on commercial fuels such as propane, and delivering efficient, clean power. WATT has developed a proprietary manufacturing technique—similar to 3D printing—called the Additive Manufacturing Process (“AMP”), which creates an entire fuel cell tube using automated printing processes. AMP allows for the integration of low-cost design innovation and positions WATT with superior leveraged scalability to drive down unit costs as commercial manufacturing ramps up to meet demand.  WATT’s products are based on a common stack-module, a building block that enables flexibility to address multiple markets with varying form and power factors with minimal additional development cost. Different applications require different amounts of power, which are addressed by any multiple of the stack-modules, analogous to a blade server type module, where additional power can be obtained by adding blades. Applications requiring more power are addressed by simply adding more modules. Demonstrations have shown that “power networking” modules do not negatively affect system performance.  In 2015, the Company introduced a 1kW portable, propane powered, hybrid SOFC system, which includes power management capabilities. The hybrid system is quiet, lightweight (less than 30lbs), efficient, and has the ability to utilize both hydrocarbon fuels in conjunction with solar or wind technologies to optimize power output, energy storage and fuel consumption.

What is a Fuel Cell?

A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy stored in fuels directly into usable electrical energy. Conventional gas generators create mechanical energy by combusting fuels, and then converting the mechanical energy into electricity via a generator (alternator). Fuel cells eliminate the additional conversion steps and provide usable electrical and heat energy directly from the stored chemical energy.  For instance, a battery in your phone holds only so much power and then it needs to be re-charged. Usually, batteries are re-charged with electricity from a standard wall outlet. But where does the electricity come from? It might come from a coal fired power station, a nuclear reactor, a hydro-electric dam such as Niagara Falls or any variety of other means depending where you live. But when you are at sea, out camping, in a disaster relief situation, or even when the neighborhood power goes out—then what do you do?

The Simple Solution with Powerful Results

Simple. Powerful. Effective. The worldwide demand for a dependable power source finds its answer in WATT’s Nemesis Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) System .  With remote locations unable to connect to the grid and requiring a power source, a reliable solution to provide power during operational hours for minimal to maximum output is needed. Unfortunately, bad weather, seasonal variations, and even the time of day can negatively affect installed solar and wind technologies; even batteries, the incumbent energy storage solution, can become expensive with frequent replacement because of the consequences of these effects.

The loss of power is a loss of time; a loss of time is a loss of profits.

Nemesis Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Systems automatically, efficiently and quietly provide clean power on demand. The Nemesis system creates power from natural gas and propane, readily-available and easily-accessible fuels. Its Hybrid Energy Power Manager combines the advantages of solar energy with the “always on” capability of the fuel cell to manage the power and maintain the batteries at optimal charge. Lost profit over loss of power is minimized to the point of inscrutability with the uninterrupted power supplied by WATT.  Nemesis offers an effective and simple solution to the bottom line, Working All The Time for your remote power needs.
