About Company

WFS Technologies Ltd is a global leader in subsea wireless instrumentation and control solutions for the Offshore Oil and Gas industry. We offer innovative solutions from concept development right through to delivery and offshore installation. We have a vast amount of knowledge and expertise to provide wireless solutions for any subsea project.

Having worked with customers in offshore renewables, environmental monitoring, security and consumer industries, the company has delivered more than 6,000 wireless systems globally and Seatooth® technology is designed into many third-party systems.

WFS is a founding member of the Subsea Wireless Group (SWiG), a not-for-profit organization, established to promote and direct the use of the use of through water communication technologies within the oil and gas sector. Members include Chevron, BP, Statoil, ConocoPhillips, One Subsea, FMC, Oceaneering, Technip, Subsea 7, Yokogawa, Sonardyne, Teledyne and Kongsberg.

Applications

WFS has proven capabilities in subsea wireless instrumentation that are trusted by the Oil and Gas industry to solve problems in the following application areas:

  • Asset Integrity Management
  • Drilling Controls
  • Subsea Operations

Asset Integrity Management

Pigging

Using Seatooth®, data and images can be transmitted through a pipe wall for location verification as well as providing immediate feedback from sensors within the pipe rather than the traditional creation of a defect map post run. Additionally two way communications can be enabled for commands to be sent to the pig.

Structural Monitoring

Seatooth® systems have been deployed to monitor structures susceptible to integrity issues caused by elastic fatigue, including wave motion and damage.

Mooring Monitoring

Typically, once an alarm is received to indicate a problem with chains on a production vessel, it’s too late.  Wireless solutions from WFS provide real-time data on mooring chain tension and inclination for all types of vessels, platforms and floating structures.

An accelerometer and/or strain gauge can be mounted onto a mooring line and connected to a Seatooth® modem. The modem transmits data using RF to a monitoring ROV or directly through the water-air interface to the topside.

This solution gives real time feedback on the orientation and condition of the mooring line.

Corrosion and Cathodic Protection Monitoring

Seatooth® wireless data transfer capability has been designed into corrosion monitoring systems to facilitate the harvesting of corrosion data. Minimizing threat to structural integrity resulting in mechanical failures. Sensors can be deployed for up to 15 years on both passive and active CP systems.

In salt water, steel structures are typically coated to protect them from corrosion. Those coatings might breakdown over time, be damaged during installation or service and it might not even be possible to reach all areas requiring protection. Additional measures need to be put in place to ensure integrity and protect from corrosion to those structures.

Cathodic protection (CP) is a technique used to control the corrosion of metal by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. In passive CP, protection comes from a “sacrificial” metal attached to the corrodible metal, to act as the anode.

All CP systems should be monitored regularly to ensure optimum performance. WFS have worked in partnership with Deepwater Corrosion Services and Stork Technical Services to monitor the effects of corrosion by monitoring CP performance wirelessly using Seatooth® technology.

Data can be recovered in real time over a wireless network or periodically with a diver or ROV, providing the maintenance team with time-stamped data and continuous charts showing the condition of the CP system for both preventive and diagnostic applications.

Benefits of wireless CP  monitoring:

  • Deployable in remote and inaccessible locations.
  • Flexible to retrofit – nodes do not require hard wiring into place.
  • No wires through splash zone.
  • Continuous data collection allows an accurate calculation of the end of life of an anode.
  • Optimum levels of CP are applied, based on actual conditions on the structure.
  • Provision of time-stamped condition data from the CP system – indicates when to apply retrofit or plan maintenance.
