Why are clean energy choices important?
Bullfrog's mission is founded on a belief that consumers have a unique power to change the world, and that it is important to make clean energy choices available so that consumers can exert their influence. When clean energy choices are available, many good things happen. Individuals have the opportunity to take action and reduce their own environmental footprint. As more and more people choose renewable energy, green solutions become increasingly affordable both as a result of the technology being improved and through economies of scale. And, collectively, our demand helps to increase the amount of renewable energy being generated and injected onto the energy systems. In addition, when thousands of people take a stand for renewable energy, they create an inspiring example for the rest of the community. They also send a powerful message to industry and government about the importance of renewable energy, and thereby initiate and enable political change. Having multiple energy choices available stimulates discussion, education and ultimately conservation and wiser energy management.

Our community also helps bring new community-based renewable energy projects online across Canada. We provide critical financing to help these projects through the construction and development phases—which can be the most difficult phases. To date, Bullfrog has supported more than 50 projects across Canada.

Bullfrog is raising the standards for green energy in Canada. We do this by exceeding current requirements, working to improve standards (such as the EcoLogoM standard for green electricity) and creating new standards (such as those developed through ICF International for green natural gas). We make publicly available audits of our product offerings by a nationally recognized accounting firm. These audits confirm that as much green energy has been injected onto the respective energy system as our consumers have purchased. And, we publish our emission reductions data and methodology. We partner with leading Canadian environmental non-governmental organizations on efforts to promote sustainability.

We are active in the electrification of transportation using renewable electricity. It is important that electric vehicles, as they become more common, run on renewable electricity in order to ensure that the pollution does not move from the vehicle's tailpipe to a polluting electricity generation facility. Through partnerships with bullfrogpowered customers Mitsubishi Canada and Nissan Canada, we are raising awareness of the important link between renewable energy and EVs. In early 2012, we made our biggest leap yet in this area by partnering with Chevrolet Canada to launch the Chevrolet Volt Bullfrog Power Edition, Canada's first EV to come with emissions-free, renewable electricity.

As a Certified B Corporation, Bullfrog Power meets higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations are required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and the environment.
We have also committed to donate 10% of after-tax operating profits to organizations that support environmental sustainability. The founders have also pledged 10% of the founding equity to organizations that promote sustainability.

As always, we continue to advocate for conservation and energy efficiency, for which new forms of renewable energy are no substitute. Even with conservation and renewable energy, there are times currently when fossil fuel is an unavoidable choice, for instance for necessary car or air travel. Bullfrog Power Green Energy Audits

Green electricity and green natural gas are unusual products. As such, they may seem difficult to evaluate. How can you, as a customer, be sure that green energy is genuinely being generated on your behalf? What measures are in place to ensure that the energy is injected onto the respective electricity or natural gas system? And, is there any risk that the environmental benefits (such as carbon emission reductions) are being "double-counted", i.e., that someone else is taking credit for that green energy?

Your safeguard is a green energy audit. Bullfrog Power's green energy products are based on a legally binding contract under which a provider is obligated to retire green energy attributes on behalf of its customers. An audit is the proof customers have that their green energy provider meets its commitments.

Bullfrog pioneered the concept of an annual audit for green electricity retailers when it launched in 2005. We also created an audit for green natural gas when we launched that product in 2011.

Across Canada, Bullfrog Power's green electricity is sourced exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that meet—and in most cases exceed—EcoLogoM standards for renewable energy. EcoLogo is Canada's most widely recognized and respected multi-attribute environmental certification mark.

Our green natural gas product is also produced right here in Canada, at a landfill gas project in Quebec. The facilities meet strict environmental standards as defined by ICF International, a global consulting firm that specializes in environmental issues.

Both products are audited annually by Deloitte to verify that as much green energy has been injected onto the respective energy system as our customers have purchased, and that we have retired all emissions credits related to customer contracts, thereby preventing double counting of the environmental benefits.
