Why We Do What We Do
At Clearway Community Solar, we believe in a clean energy future. And we believe that doing your part shouldnt be hard or a hassle. It should not be costly or overly complex. We have designed a solar energy program that makes supporting renewable energy both accessible and practical. In short, we make renewable, reachable. We make it easy to do your part.
Our Values
New Yorks Solar for All Program
Clearway took an important step forward in increasing access to solar to customers, with two of its Hudson Valley Solar Farms dedicating subscriptions to the groundbreaking Solar for All program, providing Community Solar farm subscriptions to low-income households. Administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the “Solar for All” program offers eligible low-income households the opportunity to subscribe to a Community Solar project in their area without any upfront costs or fees. Two of Clearways first Community solar projects in the Hudson Valley, the Crans Mill and Underhill solar farms, will be supporting the program.
The Hudson Valley CSA Coalition
In early 2019, Clearway Community Solar partnered with the Hudson Valley Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Coalition to underwrite a fund designed to further the CSA programming and begin development and research on a CSA offer for low-income families in the region. Clearways commitment to the CSA Coalition was designed to support the Coalitions high priority projects and additionally aid exploratory planning to make CSA shares more accessible to low-income households. Established in 2016, the Hudson Valley CSA Coalition is a collaborative effort led by farmers and facilitated by Glynwood with the mission to support, expand, and diversify participation in Community Supported Agriculture throughout the region. Over eighty farms in thirteen counties participate in the Coalition
GRID Alternatives
Clearway is proud to support GRID Alternatives, a national leader in helping low-income communities and communities of color nationwide get clean, affordable solar power and solar jobs. Through our financial contributions, Clearway is supporting GRID Alternatives programs across the country, and Clearway staff are volunteering their time to help install solar panels through GRIDs affordable solar homes program.
Why Clearway Community Solar Shines
Alternating Current (AC) vs Direct Current (DC)
Alternating current (AC) or Direct Current (DC) refers to the direction that electricity flows within a current. One primary difference is the power source of the current. DC only flows in one direction and its power source is from batteries or fuel cells. Laptops and electric cars run off a DC. AC reverses directions of electricity flow in regular cycles and is generally used in wall outlets. On a solar farm, an inverter is required as part of the photovoltaic system to convert the power from DC to AC for distribution to the electric grid.
Bill Offset
Clearway Community Solar customers will receive the credit value generated by the assigned portion of the Clearway Community Solar farm in solar credits to help reduce their electricity bill. Depending on your home energy usage and the amount of solar production, the value of the solar credits could help offset your energy bill. The amount of your energy supply charges that are reduced, or offset, is your bill offset percentage.
Carbon Dioxide Emissions (Carbon Emissions)
The greenhouse gases produced from natural sources (like the ocean) and human sources (like transportation). Fossil fuels are the leading cause of carbon emissions from human activities. In the case of Clearway Community Solar, one way the environmental impact of our program can be understood is by the offsets of carbon emissions made by the solar energy produced from our solar farms. For example, over the lifetime of a customers contract, the average Clearway Community Solar customer could offset the carbon emissions equivalent of a car driving over 280,000 miles.
