History

We have a long and proud history in the community. Through 100 + years of growth and change, we have delivered.

Important Milestones

1906

The original Galt, Preston and Hespeler Hydro utilities were among the first in the province to join together to create an organization of "public utilities".

1978

Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro-Electric Commission was formed with a mandate to distribute electricity to customers in the City of Cambridge, and the Township of North Dumfries. The utility was governed by a board of Commissioners made up of the Mayor of the City of Cambridge, the Mayor of the Township of North Dumfries and three Commissioners elected by the voters during municipal elections.

1997

Our Energy+ wordmark was introduced. This branded entity is pronounced "Energy Plus" which speaks to the innovative ways that we provide value added services to our customers. We are proud of the track record of our employees, our service and our reliability.

1999

The former Paris Public Utilities, Brantford Township Hydro, Burford Hydro and the St. George Public Utilities became Brant County Power Inc. on January 1, 1999.

2000

Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro-Electric no longer a Commission.

2002

The electricity industry across the Province of Ontario opened up to competition. This date is referred to as "Market Opening" because electricity became a commodity traded in the competitive marketplace with a fluctuating price. At this time, customers had the option of signing a contract with a Retailer to be billed at a predetermined fixed contract rate for their energy usage. Those customers that did not sign a contract were billed for their energy use based on what it costs us to purchase the energy, on their behalf, in the fluctuating marketplace.

The price volatility of energy after market opening was unexpected. Ontario's increasing demand for energy coupled with a declining supply meant volatility in what was already a new climate for Ontarians. As a temporary measure, to minimize disruption to consumers the government initiated further changes to the regulations. They introduced "Designated Customers" and "Non-Designated Customers".

  • Designated Customers - Based on size and type of business these customers were eligible to purchase commodity at a fixed flat rate of 4.3 cents per kWh. Designated customers included residential and small users, as well as a host of other named users including farmers, charitable organizations, etc.
  • Non-Designated Customers - Customers who didn't fall into any of the above categories were Non-Designated, which meant they were subject to fluctuating market prices.

2003-2004

In November, a change in Provincial government leadership led to new announcements about the electrical industry. Early in 2004 more changes were implemented including a new rate block structure and an increased responsibility for your local utility to provide demand side management initiatives and education about energy conservation.

2010-2011

The Ontario government mandated that all residential and small commercial customers in Ontario would have a smart meter installed in order to pave the way for Time-of-Use pricing. We rolled out Time-of-Use pricing to our customers in the summer and fall of 2012.

2014

On November 28, 2014, our utility purchased Brant County Power, a local distribution company that delivers electricity to 9,900 customers within the County of Brant including the communities of Burford, Cainsville, Mt. Pleasant, Paris and St. George.

2016

On January 1, 2016, the Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro and Brant County Power business names were retired and our businesses joined together to become "Better Together" as Energy+ Inc.
