Our Alberta Heritage

In the early 1970s, the Government of Alberta initiated a program to establish rural gas utilities and bring natural gas to rural communities throughout Alberta. Gas Alberta was initially set up as government agency to purchase and manage natural gas supplies on behalf of these utilities.     Today, Gas Alberta Inc. (GAI) is a private corporation owned by its 74 natural gas utility customers that serve approximately 75% of the natural gas franchise areas in Alberta. GAI is a consumer-owned business that operates on a non-profit basis, with full cost recovery from its shareholders. GAI’s 74 shareholder customers are comprised of Gas Co-ops, Municipalities, Counties and First Nation natural gas utilities. Our customers’ rural distribution systems include over 120,000 kilometers of pipeline, the largest of its kind in the world. The majority of our customers’ (population over 350,000) utilize natural gas for such purposes as institutional heating, commercial businesses, domestic heating, farming and ranching operations, irrigation, grain drying and greenhouses.     In 2003, Gas Alberta Energy (GAE) was created to assist GAI with the sole objective to provide non-shareholder customers unbiased market representation, consultative and supply procurement services. Today, GAE is a successful market representative for energy consumers in Alberta and Saskatchewan including municipalities, universities, school districts and First Nations. Our successful hedging strategies and risk management policies have earned us a reputation for providing our customers with exceptional service and outstanding prices. This is best exemplified by a recent comment from an local Alberta distribution company, "the word on the street is GAE pricing is the one to beat."
