About Company

Sigma Energy Storage’s scalable Hybrid Thermal-Compressed Air Energy Storage (HT-CAES) technology reduces fossil fuel consumption and enables green energy use by firming intermittent renewables such as solar, wind, or tidal power, for maximum economic and environmental impact.

MISSION

Sigma Energy Storage contributes to the global fight against climate change by providing clean energy storage technology that will reduce fossil fuel consumption and facilitate the adoption of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and tidal power.

HISTORY

Sigma Energy Storage and its scalable technology have been recognized by several innovation and entrepreneurship prizes in the field of environment and sustainable development. In 2014 Sigma was honored at the Quebec Entrepreneurship Awards. In 2015, a fully-functional Alpha prototype was completed. In 2016, Sigma Energy Storage secured Sustainable Development Technologies Canada funding, won the ENERGY GLOBE National Award for Canada, and was a finalist at the London-based EI Awards (Environment) and Quebec’s ADRIQ Innovation Gala (Green Innovation). In 2017 Sigma brought home two Accolades awards (Montreal West Island Chamber of Commerce) – High Technology & Innovation and Sustainable Development.

OUR TEAM

Our well-rounded team of engineers, scientists, and business leaders includes seasoned experts and fresh talent, combining proven technology development experience and cutting-edge innovation. We share the belief that excellence and client-oriented solutions are the product of our integrity and competitive spirit.

HT-CAES TECHNOLOGY

  • Electricity from any source (solar, wind, tidal, nuclear, even excess diesel) can enter the HT-CAES system to be stored for use at the optimal time. The time it takes to store can be customized by adding compression capacity.
  • Energy is stored in two forms: potential mechanical energy (compressed air) and thermal energy (hot thermal fluid). The size of the vessel determines the amount of energy stored. Compressed air can be stored in tanks (above-ground containerized HT-CAES) or in natural megavessels such as salt domes or rock pools (underground HT-CAES).
  • This highly scalable technology can be CONTAINERIZED, for above-ground, micro-grid scale applications, or UNDERGROUND, for utility-scale projects.

CONTAINERIZED ENERGY STORAGE

Containerized, above-ground energy storage, achieved using tanks to hold the compressed air, is well-suited for use in microgrids, such as in remote communities, industrial sites, or military installations, or where underground storage is impossible or impractical.  Sigma Energy Storage has specifically designed their above-ground Hybrid Thermal-Compressed Air Energy Storage (HT-CAES) technology for use in rugged climates including the Canadian Arctic.

UNDERGROUND HT-CAES:

  • Seasonal or strategic energy storage
  • Integrate renewables at utility scale
  • Massive storage capacity in natural megavessels
  • Lowest levelized cost of energy at scale
  • Non-emitting dispatchable power
