SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has taken the final investment decision on the Ruwais Diyab unconventional gas development in Abu Dhabi, targeting initial production of 345 million standard cubic feet per day of raw gas from 2029.
ADNOC announced the final investment decision on November 2 during ADIPEC 2026, advancing what it described as its first large-scale unconventional gas development.
The project is expected to deliver 345 million standard cubic feet per day of raw gas from 2029 over a 25-year period, with the potential to expand production to as much as 1 billion standard cubic feet per day.
Gas produced from Ruwais Diyab will be processed at the project site and connected to the UAE's gas network through new pipeline infrastructure.
ADNOC said the additional supply will support domestic gas demand, industrial growth and its broader liquefied natural gas export ambitions.
The development follows technical studies, field testing and subsurface analysis carried out by ADNOC Onshore under a design-build-operate model.
The project will combine advanced subsurface expertise with AI-enabled drilling and well-completion technologies as ADNOC works to reduce development risks and build a scalable unconventional gas business.
Ruwais Diyab moves ADNOC's unconventional gas strategy from testing and appraisal into large-scale development. The initial 345 MMscf/d target is only the first phase: ADNOC says the project could ultimately scale to 1 Bscf/d, giving the company additional supply for both domestic demand and its expanding LNG value chain.
UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said the investment marked an important milestone in unlocking Abu Dhabi's gas resources and strengthening the country's energy security.
ADNOC is developing unconventional gas resources as part of a wider effort to increase domestic supply and support rising demand from industrial and international customers.
