SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery is aiming to position itself as a major global refining hub by significantly expanding its crude oil processing capabilities.
Currently, the refinery can process nearly 40 crude grades. It plans to increase its processing capacity significantly, making it capable of processing up to 130 grades. The move is expected to boost the refinery’s operational flexibility and strengthen its competitiveness in international markets.
According to David Bird, CEO of Dangote Refinery, the proposed diversification will support the refinery’s plan to double the facility’s processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day. The ability to process a wider range of crude grades will allow the refinery to source oil from multiple regions based on market conditions, pricing, and availability, Bird added.
The refinery will actively participate in crude blending and could process substantial volumes of Middle Eastern crude alongside other international grades. This, in turn, will reduce operating costs to below $2 per barrel, thus placing it among the world’s most cost-efficient large-scale refineries.
Upon increasing production, Dangote Refinery targets to securing long-term offtake agreements with global distributors and national oil companies, so as to ensure sustained growth in global markets. By becoming one of the most cost-efficient refineries in the world, Dangote is positioned to compete directly with established Middle Eastern and Asian refining hubs.
