GTT wins key gig for strategic China LNG project

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): French engineer GTT has won a contract to design three very large onshore liquefied natural gas storage tanks for PipeChina’s Yuedong LNG terminal project in Jieyang city in China’s Guangdong province.

PipeChina is expanding its Yuedong receiving and regasification terminal from the initial 2 million tonnes per annum capacity to 6 million tpa, with completion targeted by 2029.

GTT will design three 240,000-cubic-metre onshore LNG storage tanks, the world's largest featuring the latest version of its GST membrane full containment technology, under the order from partner China Chengda Engineering Company.

Xu Gang, China Chengda president, declared:“This project reflects our shared commitment to delivering advanced, safe and efficient LNG infrastructure solutions.”

GTT said GST delivers “inherent advantages” over land storage tank traditional technology, as its design enables a 40% reduction in steel requirements, thereby contributing to emissions reduction across the value chain. It also incorporates optimised insulation, ensuring high and consistent energy performance.

“Thanks to the compactness of the GST technology, the tanks can offer up to 10% more LNG storage capacity within the same footprint,” noted GTT.

The three tanks, which are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2028, also can store other liquefied gases such as ethane, propane, ethylene and ammonia. GTT did not disclose the value of this contract.

The Yuedong LNG terminal project is a strategic hub in South China’s natural gas network.

“We are proud to support our partners in advancing the country’s energy transition and strengthening its energy infrastructure,” commented GTT chief executive Francois Michel.
