SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Russia has deployed naval assets to escort an oil tanker being tracked and potentially targeted by US forces in the North Atlantic, according to a report by CBS News. The move raises the risk of a diplomatic confrontation as Washington intensifies enforcement of sanctions linked to Venezuelan oil exports.
The vessel, now named Marinera, is currently sailing without cargo but has historically transported Venezuelan crude. It was believed to be located between Scotland and Iceland on Tuesday. The ship was previously known as Bella 1 and was targeted by the US Coast Guard last month in the Caribbean for allegedly violating US sanctions by shipping Iranian oil. After evading boarding, it reportedly changed course, renamed itself, and reflagged from Guyana to Russia.

Oil up on news the US intercepted an oil tanker off Venezuela
US President Donald Trump last month ordered a “blockade” of sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, accusing Caracas of using maritime routes for drug trafficking. Two US officials told CBS News that American forces are considering boarding the tanker, preferring seizure over destruction.
Russia said it is “monitoring with concern” the situation, insisting the vessel is operating legally under international maritime law. Maritime analysts note that a change in name or flag does not alter a ship’s sanctions status, potentially setting the stage for further escalation.
