SEATTLE (Oil Monster): When compared to the previous month, India's imports of crude oil from the United States increased significantly in January of this year. The United States is now the nation's fifth-largest oil provider, per trade sources. Compared to 70,600 barrels per day (bpd) in December 2024, India purchased 218,400 bpd of oil from the US in January 2025.
Russia continued to remain as the top crude oil supplies, with shipments of 1.58 million bpd, higher by 4.3% month-on-month, said data. With refiners deciding to buy oil from companies and ships that have not been sanctioned by the U.S., the purchase of Russian oil is expected to see a decline in the coming months. The country has been increasingly shifting to non-Russian oil purchases recently.
The oil imports from the Middle East region rose 6.5% to 2.7 million bpd in January this year. The leading supplier from the region was Iraq, followed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
When compared to the previous month, the proportion of Russian oil stayed relatively unchanged, while the Middle Eastern oil accounted for approximately 53% of the nation's total oil imports.
According to data, India's total oil imports increased by 4.5% to an average of 4.8 million barrels per day over the first 10 months of the current fiscal year.
