SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Eni announced a massive natural gas discovery, nearly 85 kilometres offshore East Kalimantan in Indonesia. Early estimates suggest a total structure discovered volume of 5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas in place. The company will now consider the options for a fast track development of the Geng North-1 exploration well in North Ganal PSC.

According to company press release, a gas column about 50 m thick was encountered in a Miocene sandstone reservoir, while drilling Geng North-1 to a depth of 5,025 m. A full assessment of the natural gas discovery was successfully performed using a well production test. It has suggested an estimated well capacity of up to 80-100 MMcfd and about 5-6 Mbpd of condensate.
Eni’s ongoing exploration campaign is in line with the company’s strategy to shift its portfolio mix towards gas and LNG, with Indonesia and South-East Asia in general playing a vital role.
The natural gas discovery will bolster efforts to create a new production hub in the northern part of the Kutei basin. As per estimates, more than 5 Tcf of natural gas in place are present in undeveloped discoveries within the area, in addition to Geng North.
