Israel Resumed Limited Exports of Natural Gas

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The Israeli Energy Ministry confirmed that it has begun limited exports of natural gas. The exports have been halted following shutdown of two major offshore fields on account of military activities in the region. It must be noted that the country had halted exports in order to give priority to domestic needs.

According to the Ministry spokesperson, the resumed exports are being derived from surplus supplies. The gas is mainly exported to Jordan. Also, low volumes have been exported to Egypt as well.

On 13 June, the country had announced closure of Chevron-operated Leviathan and Energean-run Karish fields. Only the Tamar field has been operational since then. The output from Tamar fields has been used to meet domestic demand.

Meanwhile, Eli Cohen, the country’s Energy Minister stated that the exports in full swing would resume only after military authorities certify that such exports are deemed safe. The exports were blocked so as to save the strategic oil reserves, he added.

As per estimates by the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI), Israeli gas makes up almost 60% of Egypt’s energy mix. The country imports almost 60% of its natural gas from Israel. In order to meet requirements, Egypt is seen actively pursuing deals to import natural gas from alternative sources, in addition to preparing additional floating regasification units.
