SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Ukraine’s Naftogaz Group has secured long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification capacity in Europe for the first time, marking a significant step in the country’s effort to diversify gas supplies and strengthen long-term energy security.
The reservation gives Naftogaz access to the LNG terminal in Klaipeda, Lithuania, from 2033 through 2044. The capacity allocation was conducted by terminal operator KN Energies, with Naftogaz among five successful participants alongside Equinor, Ignitis, Latvenergo, and Gasum.
The agreement gives Naftogaz direct access to long-term LNG import infrastructure, helping the company diversify procurement options and improve supply flexibility amid ongoing geopolitical and market pressures. It also supports Ukraine’s broader effort to reduce reliance on traditional gas supply routes.
This is the first time Naftogaz has directly secured terminal capacity on its own. Previously, the company participated in LNG-related operations through partnerships with international energy firms.
Naftogaz Chief Executive Sergii Koretskyi said the move will expand Ukraine’s access to global LNG resources and help ensure long-term stability in the country’s gas supply system. The deal also underscores the growing importance of LNG infrastructure in Europe’s regional energy planning.
