Natural Gas Discovered in Waters Off Cyprus Could Reach Europe by 2027

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Cyprus expects to begin exporting natural gas to European markets by 2027, a development that could significantly support Europe’s efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy supplies, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced.

The initial exports will come from Cronos, one of six offshore natural gas fields managed by a consortium led by Italy’s Eni and TotalEnergies of France. Preliminary estimates indicate that the Cronos field contains approximately 3.1 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas.

Under the proposed plan, gas from Cronos will be transported to the liquefaction plant in Damietta, Egypt, where it will be processed and subsequently exported to Europe using existing infrastructure connected to Egypt’s Zohr gas field. A final investment decision from the consortium is expected by next year.

In parallel, Cyprus is also assessing export potential from the Aphrodite gas field, operated by Chevron, NewMed Energy, and Shell. Estimated to hold around 5.6 trillion cubic feet of gas, Aphrodite’s production could be routed to a processing facility near Port Said, Egypt, for domestic use or liquefaction for European export.

These developments mark a major step forward for Cyprus’ role in regional energy supply and European energy security.
