Ranked: World’s Topmost Natural Gas Producing Countries

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): According to the latest Statistical Review of World Energy, total global production of natural gas exceeded 4,124 billion cubic meters (bcm) during the previous year.

The leading natural gas producer was the U.S., with a production of 1,033 billion cubic metres. The country’s vast shale gas reserves coupled with advances in hydraulic fracking technology, particularly in regions like the Permian Basin and Appalachian Basin, helped the country to remain as the world’s leading producer.

Russia recorded a production of 629.9 billion cubic metres. The country emerged as the second largest producer, despite being hit by geopolitical challenges and sanctions. Companies like Gazprom dominated the country’s natural gas sector.

In third place was Iran, with a production of 262.9 billion cubic metres. The country has reported increased production from South Pars field, in support of increased domestic consumption and regional export demand. However, international sanctions continued to impact the broader market access.

The other countries to feature in the top ten list along with their production in billion cubic metres is as follows: China (248.4), Canada (194.2), Qatar (179.5), Australia (150.1), Saudi Arabia (121.5), Norway (113.2) and Algeria (94.7).
