SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has declared that the country is ready to resume natural gas supplies to Slovakia. Speaking during a meeting with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini on 8 December 8 Aliyev stated that deliveries began last year and can continue whenever required.
President Pellegrini described energy diversification as a pressing issue for Slovakia, especially with the European Union set to ban Russian gas imports. He named Azerbaijan as a potential long-term partner in securing supplies.
“Azerbaijan can play a leading role for Slovakia,” said Peter Pellegrini. “We are talking about diversifying our energy supplies. Of course, we recognise that Azerbaijan can be a long-term strategic partner for us. Our delegations will continue negotiations so that this becomes an agreement acceptable for Slovakia and allows us to benefit from Azerbaijan’s resources.”
President Aliyev announced that new gas field developments will increase export capacity, allowing larger volumes to reach Slovakia and the neighbouring countries. Azerbaijan already supplies fourteen countries with total exports reaching 25 billion cubic metres annually. Half of this volume now flows to Europe.
The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) started delivering gas to Slovakia on 1 December 2024 under a short-term pilot contract signed in November. Details of volumes and pricing were not disclosed.
