Cedar LNG Signs 12-Year Deal with Ovintiv to Boost Canadian LNG Exports

SEATTLE (Oil Monster):Cedar LNG, a partnership between the Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipeline Corporation, has finalized a long-term agreement with Canadian natural gas producer Ovintiv for its floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility on Canada’s West Coast. The 12-year contract covers 0.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquefaction capacity, complementing Pembina’s ongoing remarketing of its 1.5 mtpa facility capacity.

Meghan Eilers, Ovintiv’s EVP of Midstream and Marketing, highlighted that the deal strengthens market access for the Montney gas resource while supporting global LNG exports, energy security, and emissions reduction efforts.

The Cedar LNG project, with a nameplate capacity of 3.3 mtpa, is set to begin commercial operations in late 2028. Pembina will provide both transportation and liquefaction services under the agreement, enabling Ovintiv to reach new export markets efficiently. Its West Coast location offers North America’s shortest shipping route to Asia.

This Indigenous majority-owned FLNG facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, will run on clean hydroelectric power, producing ultra low-carbon LNG designed to displace higher-emission fuels in international markets. The new Ovintiv deal follows a previous 20-year agreement with Petronas for 1 mtpa at Cedar LNG, underscoring Pembina’s strategic expansion in sustainable LNG infrastructure.
