SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The most recent data published by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) indicates that natural gas consumption by the country surged higher by 12.8% during the fourth quarter of the previous year, as compared with Q4 2022. The surge in consumption was mainly driven by elevated demand from power generation plants, it said.

The natural gas consumption by power generating plants totalled 18,524.8 million standard cubic feet (mscf) during the fourth quarter of last year. This compares to consumption of 16,150.8 mscf during the corresponding fourth quarter in 2022. The plants consumed approximately 86% of the produced natural gas.
The quarter reported natural gas production of 21,935.6mscf, higher by 4.7% over the prior year quarter. The rise in production was mainly in response to a rise in demand by Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco). The power generated by Tanesco soared to 2.2 million megawatt hour at end-2023, out of which almost 50% were produced from natural gas.
The production by Mnazi Bay fields recorded an increase by 32% during the quarter, while the production from Songo Songo fields witnessed a decline by 13% over the previous year quarter.
