SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Chevron Corporation announced that its liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Australia has resumed full production. The output had been impacted by a fault at Wheatstone plant coupled with strike action by around 500 unionized workers demanding better pay and benefits. The company had reported only 80% output for the past three days.
According to Chevron, a turbine tripped at the Wheatstone LNG plant, owing to an instrumentation failure. The plant was not able to resume full production until Sunday night. The output was cut by almost one-fifth. However, vessel loading was unaffected. Also, there has been no change to schedule LNG deliveries. It must be noted that the plant has an annual LNG production capacity of 8.9 million metric tons.
Nearly 500 workers belonging to the Offshore Alliance- a partnership between the Australian Workers’ Union and the Maritime Union of Australia resorted to strike action for the second day in a row, impacting the operations. The striking members warned of more disruptions in coming days, including bans on mooring tankers and loading them with gas.
The two Chevron plants in the Pilbara region together account for almost 12% of the global LNG supply.
