Spire, KC Water Collaborate on Kansas City RNG Facility

SEATTLE (Oil Monster):  Spire and KC Water will collaborate on the first renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Kansas City, Missouri. The new facility is expected to be completed next year.

The project will generate renewable energy by capturing methane emissions from the wastewater treatment process. The RNG facility is an extension of a current KC Water project. The project was approved by the Kansas City Council in end-October last year. The project is intended to repurpose biogas generated from the city’s Blue River Wastewater Treatment Plant into renewable natural gas.

The renewable energy generated at the facility will be included by Spire in their natural gas supply for customers. The customers will not have to change their natural gas appliances as the RNG will be fully compatible with conventional natural gas and existing pipeline infrastructure.

The project will help KC Water to improve air quality near their wastewater facility by capturing emissions that would otherwise be emitted into the environment. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent every year.

Spire anticipates annual natural gas production of around 0.3 billion cubic feet (BCF) from the project.
