SEATTLE (Oil Monster): NextEra Energy Resources and Basin Electric Power Cooperative have signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate the joint development of a 1,450-megawatt combined-cycle natural gas facility in North Dakota. The plant would supply power to a planned multi-gigawatt data center campus, targeting rapidly expanding energy demand from digital infrastructure.
The project would operate under Basin Electric’s Large Load Commercial Program, which ensures that high-demand customers bear the costs of new infrastructure. In October, both companies filed an application with the Southwest Power Pool to review interconnection and transmission needs.
Basin Electric CEO Todd Brickhouse said the initiative provides a sustainable framework for serving data centers without increasing costs for existing cooperative members. The approach mirrors NextEra’s Duane Arnold project in Iowa, where data center customers directly support their own generation capacity.
NextEra Energy Resources President Brian Bolster said the model will help North Dakota attract major technology investment, creating thousands of jobs and generating significant economic value. Governor Kelly Armstrong called the proposal a “win-win,” highlighting its potential to drive growth across the state.
NextEra Energy Resources, valued at $173 billion, has invested more than $3.7 billion in North Dakota since 2003.
